I make my favorite lip balm out of cacao and tallow (with a tiny bit of beeswax for structure), but I wanted to start playing with color. Upon research, I found out lanolin works really well in lip products, which I use in cracked skin formulas, so I was excited to bring that into this! We also added in some castor oil that many natural lip makers use. Then we get to play with the colors. :)
Why Lanolin Works So Well For Lips
Lanolin is essentially wool wax — it's the closest thing to human skin lipids after tallow, they're deeply complementary. Together they:
Create an incredibly occlusive moisture barrier
Give that cushiony plush lip feel
Lanolin has a natural slight tackiness that helps lipstick stay put
Both are ancestral ingredients which fits your Rational Body story perfectly
One Consideration
Lanolin is a known allergen for some people — estimated 1-3% of people react to it. Worth noting on your label and in marketing. Use cosmetic grade ultra-pure lanolin not industrial grade.
Cacao Butter Note
Excellent choice for lips specifically because:
Natural chocolate scent is subtle and universally appealing
Gives firmness and snap to the stick
Skin conditioning and antioxidant rich
Melts at skin temperature — perfect for lips
Why Castor Oil Is Back Here
For lips specifically castor oil is your friend (unlike for skin) — it's what gives lipstick that glossy wet look and helps pigments really pop. Unlike on cheeks it doesn't cause the same congestion issues on lips. It's actually the primary carrier in most natural lipsticks for good reason.

Additional Ingredients Worth Adding
Rosehip oil at 2-3% — swap some jojoba for rosehip in lip formula, the vitamin A is wonderful for lip renewal and anti-aging which is a great marketing story
Peppermint essential oil at 0.5% — natural lip plumping effect from increased circulation, also gives that tingle customers love. Use sparingly — too much burns
Vanilla extract or vanilla CO2 at 0.5-1% — enhances the cacao scent beautifully, very on brand for a natural line, customers universally love the scent
Carmine (cochineal) — if you're open to it this is the most beautiful natural red/pink pigment available, very stable, what Ogee uses in their lip products. Deeply ancestral ingredient. Not vegan.
Candelilla wax at 2-3% replacing some beeswax — harder than beeswax which helps lipstick hold shape in heat, important for farmers market display in California summer
