How Little Sugar Can You Eat in a Day?

How Little Sugar Can You Eat in a Day?

When will we notice we’ve got a problem? We used to go days, months without finding a stray berry. Now we eat fake flavored strawberry goo and think we are doing ourselves a favor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How’s your sleep, your skin, your joints, your tummy? How do you feel after eating? How’s your energy throughout the day? How often do you have to re-read something bc your brain cannot focus? You’ll be amazed to know how much inflammation from sugar can mess stuff up. You don’t even know who you are until the abrasive storm is out of your blood stream.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The recommended limit for women is 25g added sugar per day, but how practical is this when excess sugar has snuck into almost every item in the store? I try to keep my daily limit of sugar to under 20 g. A single banana puts me at 18 grams, so I stick to a handful of berries. The fiber in fruits allows for slow, steady release of glucose. The real problem with excess sugar is the blood glucose spikes. If you can monitor your levels and see what spikes your blood sugar over 40 points, that food is a problem for you. For many people, fruit and refined carbs can do that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Easiest thing to look at is to compare the 25 g limit of added sugars to what the avg person eats:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💃🏽Adult: 70 grams
🐶Teenagers: 144 grams (on average!)
👶🏻Babies up to 3 years old: 50 grams
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Those poor babies do not stand a chance of avoiding the stuff when they get older. The growing generation of people have been weened straight onto this addictive substance as if it were our life source. Let’s rewrite this story for the next generations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What foods do you want your child to crave when they grow up? Would you be proud of them for saying no to a cookie? For handing money to a bake sale without coming home with the cookies? For selling something better for people?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sugar is not only in the stuff that you know to be sweet, don’t forget the hidden stuff. It seems tough to navigate at first, but you start seeing how amazing you feel without it. Take a critical eye to the store to see that it’s not your fault we are hooked. It’s not food, but a shadow of it.

I’ve unwilling had to do this because of current health problems (possible autoimmune disorder) for the past month. Also had to give up caffeine. And I definitely was an addict of both. It hasn’t been easy but it has definitely opened my eyes to how much of s drug they both are... I do feel a positive change.

    • It’s been just about 4 weeks. I feel amazing.

    • Week 3 and yes no headaches, no cravings and 20lbs down. But i gave up bread n pastas as well. I had to have sugar daily but im glad i gave it up.

    • I wonder if it makes more sense to say added or refined sugars - 0 grams of sugar a day could mean you’re not actually getting a varied and healthy diet - for example, the natural sugars in fruits and veggies w antioxidants and vitamins that leafy greens and meat and cheese and fats alone can’t provide. I totally get the impulse but starting with 20g a day or less is probably best!

    • I have just completed a 10 day sugar detox, cutting out refined sugars, I did it because of the link between joint inflammation and pain in my knees while I was running, I did find it challenging but then that's how we learn new things, think outside the box. I enjoyed making new foods and I've even lost 2lbs but it was never about that. I'm definitely going to try and keep as much refined sugar out of my diet as I can 👌

    • I don't worry about natural sugars that occur in fruits and veg. It is the added sugars I try to avoid and it's hard. You have almost make everything from scratch to avoid it cause it is in all sorts of things, unnecessarily. You have to read labels diligently.

    • I couldn't before. Now its been since August since I had Sugar.

    • Eating no sugar is challenging when even 1 medium head of cauliflower has at least 11 grams of sugar 🙁
