All Calories are NOT Created Equal

All Calories are NOT Created Equal

A calorie is just a unit of energy. When comparing calories, though the amount of energy may be the same, your body processes these inputs very differently. It’s like measuring the quality of a driver based on the speed they drive.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Calorie in vs calorie out is a gross oversimplification of how our bodies work. What's the difference between 1000 calories of healthy food, and 1000 calories of junk food? The main difference being how your body actually uses the food you put in your body. Junk food will spike your blood sugar, cause insulin dump, and put you on an energy roller coaster all day. Real food will slowly release that glucose.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Another way to look at it is how your body uses that energy to change your cells. Your body is full of stem cells- baby cells that are deciding what to become based on instructions from your body. When you eat all junk food, your body tells those cells to become fat, because it’s thinking the food environment must be scarce, and it needs to conserve the nutrients it can find in those Cheetos and white bread. Your body cannot see we have a refrigerator full of useless food and endless options down the street. And it doesn’t matter, since even if we eat all the power bars in the world, our body will want more because you are not giving it what it wants.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you eat well and exercise, your body instructs those stem cells to become bone, muscle, or tissue to compensate. It needs your input to direct the cells somewhere, and building muscle takes more work for it than fat. And not only do the cells change, the way you feel is greatly affected. If you eat a poor diet, you’ll feel tired all day since many of the essential nutrients are missing, and your hormones are out of whack.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And let’s not forget calories created for the sole purpose of making you addicted. Our brains studied to find the cheapest (empty) calories that look, feel, and TASTE like something real.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We feel so out of control with our bodies until we learn to give it what it wants. It’s not easy to make changes to your habits, but once you start eating better, things in your body just start working right.
