Rinse-Out Conditioner

Revised Half Batch

How much you’ll actually use

  • Typical use: ~5–10 g per wash (mid-lengths to ends)

  • Washing 2–3Ă— per week:

    • 500 g = 50–80 uses

    • That’s 4–6 months for one person

That lines up perfectly with Neodefend’s comfortable window.

With 1000 g:

  • You’d likely still be using it at the far end of preservative confidence

  • You’d have more sitting around while the product slowly ages

  • You gain nothing except extra bottles

👉 500 g is the sweet spot for a personal, family-safe conditioner.

How long until it’s ready to use?

Technically usable: Same day, once it’s cooled, emulsified, and pH-adjusted

Practically “finished”: 24 hours after making is ideal, Recheck pH the next day

🧾 MANUFACTURING STEPS (HALF BATCH)

1. Heat water phase

Combine and to heat to 160–170°F (75°C), (MAX!! 🚫 176°F)

  • Distilled water (333g)

  • Aloe vera juice (50g)

  • Glycerin (2g)

  • Once (water + aloe + glycerin) is warm to 160F, dissolve panthenol in the heated mixture

    1. Sprinkle in the powdered panthenol

    2. Stir until fully dissolved

2. Heat oil phase

In a separate container, combine:

  • Cetearyl Alcohol — 50 g

  • BTMS-50 — 15 g

  • Shea Butter — 15 g

  • Mango Butter — 10 g

  • Jojoba Oil — 7.5 g

Heat to 160–170°F (75°C) until fully melted. (MAX!! 🚫 176°F)

3. Emulsify

  • Combine phases at equal temperature

    • Best temperature window: 👉 155–165°F (68–74°C)

    • Do not emulsify above: đźš« 170°F (77°C)

  • Stick blend 1–2 minutes

  • Switch to hand stirring as viscosity develops

4. Cool to 120–130°F (50°C) (Max 🚫 140°F)

Add:

  • Panthenol (if liquid, but we have powder)

  • Hydrolyzed wheat (or silk) protein, 5g

  • Honeyquat, 5g

Mix thoroughly. Stick blend again as needed so no clumps.

5. Cool to ≤105°F (≤40°C) (MAX 🚫 113°F)

Add:

  • Neodefend, 5.5g

Mix well for 2–3 minutes.

6. Test pH, 👉 Below 100°F (38°C)

  • Target 4.5–5.0

  • If needed, adjust slowly with citric acid solution

  • Recheck pH after 24 hours

Target range for this conditioner:

  • Target: 4.5–5.0

  • Acceptable: 4.4–5.1

pH Testing

  • Let the product cool to ≤100°F (38°C) (warmer can give false readings)

    • Ideal range: 80–95°F (27–35°C)

  • Test right after making, and after 24 hours

  • To Test, DO NOT soak or hold the strip in the liquid, just dip it

    • take a small sample, 1/2 tsp, dip max 1 second or so

    • lay the strip flat or hold in the air

    • Wait 10–15 seconds (or per your strip instructions) (max 30 seconds)

  • If adjustments are needed, make a 50% citric acid solution

    • 10 g citric acid powder

    • 10 g distilled water

      • Stir until fully dissolved. Label it and keep it — this lasts indefinitely.

  • Add 2-3 drops of the citric for the whole 500g batch. Stir well for 30-60 seconds

    • Let sit 1-2 minutes

    • retest as needed

  • If you overshoot, and pH goes too low (too acidic)

    • Add a tiny amount of:

      • diluted sodium hydroxide solution or

      • a few grams of distilled water (often enough for small overshoots)

Target range for this conditioner:

  • Target: 4.5–5.0

  • Acceptable: 4.4–5.1

7. Bottle & rest

  • Bottle into clean squeeze bottles

  • Let rest 24 hours before first use

Why this formula works (quick reassurance)

For curly hair (child)

  • Honeyquat + BTMS = excellent wet detangling

  • Low glycerin = no sticky buildup

  • No heavy oils or silicones

  • Rinse-out, not leave-on → lower exposure

For long straight hair (adult)

  • Light conditioning from BTMS at 3%

  • Shine from silk + panthenol

  • No waxy drag

  • Won’t collapse fine lengths when used mid-to-ends

For safety & stability

  • One preservative system (Neodefend)

  • pH aligned with hair cuticle

  • No fragrance load

  • No endocrine-associated actives

  • Kid-appropriate daily-use chemistry

Instructions

  1. Heat water phase: Heat distilled water and aloe vera juice to approximately 160-170°F (71-77°C).

  4. Cool to 120°F (49°C): Continue stirring occasionally as mixture cools.

  5. Add actives: When cooled to 120°F, add panthenol, hydrolyzed silk protein, and glycerin. Mix well.

  6. Preserve: Add Geogard 221 when mixture is below 100°F (38°C).

  7. Adjust pH: Test pH and adjust to 4.5-5.0 using citric acid solution.

  8. Bottle: Pour into squeeze bottles. Allow to rest 24 hours for texture to stabilize.

Usage Instructions
