Why We Chose Tallow: Launching Our New Whipped Tallow Lotion

At Rational Body, we believe skincare should be as thoughtful as the food we eat. Our skin isn’t just a cover — it’s alive, it reacts, and it matters what we put on it.

This season, as we head into Bay Area markets, we’re proud to share our Vanilla Latte Whipped Tallow Lotion. It’s handmade in small batches and designed for sensitive skin — especially my boys’ skin.

I built this for them. As a parent, and as an engineer, I couldn’t accept the idea of rubbing unstable oils, harsh chemicals, or hormone disruptors onto their bodies. I wanted something real, simple, and done right.

No one else was making it correctly. So we did.

Why Tallow?

Tallow — rendered fat from grass-fed cows — has been trusted for centuries. It works so well because its fats are almost identical to the natural oils in human skin. That means it absorbs smoothly and actually helps instead of sitting on the surface.

Tallow brings:

  • Vitamins A, D, E, and K — key to healthy, resilient skin.

  • Balanced fats — close to what our skin already makes, so it feels natural.

  • Gentleness — calm enough for eczema, psoriasis, or kids’ skin.

  • Real protection — helps lock in moisture and keep skin strong.

We then take it a step further. Our lotion is slow-infused with whole vanilla beans and coffee beans in light oils like jojoba and sugarcane squalane. This adds antioxidants, circulation support, and a warm, natural scent — without heavy perfumes or essential oils that can disrupt hormones.

This is skincare that makes sense: simple, safe, and rooted in tradition.

About the Cows

Some people pause when they hear “tallow.” They wonder if it’s ethical.

Here’s the truth: no cows are harmed for our lotion. Tallow comes from suet — a part of the animal that’s usually thrown away in industrial systems. By partnering with local, grass-fed, regenerative farms, we make sure nothing is wasted and that farmers who care about their animals are supported.

The way we see it, every meal, every product we use, comes with sacrifice. Something living sustains us. So let’s do it honestly and respectfully. We choose only farms where cows live on grass, in dignity, the way they’re meant to.

If industrial farming were our only option, we’d be vegan. But our bodies — our skin too — need the real nutrients animals provide when they are raised right.

What We Refuse

Industrial farming is broken. Cows fed grain, trash, or chemical byproducts get sick. They need antibiotics. Their fat shifts into an unhealthy profile that passes to us. Fertilizer piles up into toxic waste. Stress and confinement upset their hormones, which we then absorb.

Grass-fed farming is the opposite: balanced fats, healthy soil, and animals living in line with nature.

California voters saw this clearly when they passed a simple rule: pigs should be able to turn around in their cages. That it caused an industry panic shows how far we’ve strayed from basic decency.

“Organic” and “grass-fed” shouldn’t be labels. They should be the baseline. Cows should eat grass. Fertilizer should build soil. Food and skincare should never require hazmat suits.

A Personal Mission

This lotion is more than a product. It’s a choice I made for my family.

I made it because I won’t accept chemical-laden creams for my kids. I made it because my husband and I believe humans can do better — for animals, for the planet, for each other.

This lotion is for anyone, but it started with my boys. For their sensitive skin. For their future.

Where to Find Us

You’ll see Rational Body at holiday markets across the Bay Area this season. Stop by, try the lotion, and join the conversation. We’ll share our story, our methods, and our partnerships with local farms.

We can’t fix the system overnight. But every choice matters — every meal, every product, every jar of lotion.

Our Vanilla Latte Whipped Tallow Lotion is part of a bigger commitment: to do things the right way, to honor what sustains us, and to make products that help rather than harm.

Your body never takes the day off. Your skincare shouldn’t either.

I made our Whipped Tallow Lotion for my boys’ sensitive skin, because when I looked around, nothing on the market was actually following the science or even basic directions for how skin works.

In our home, we are intentional about everything — no refined sugar, no corn syrup, no fake foods, and as little plastic as possible. And it hit me: why stop at food? Everything we put on our skin matters too.

That’s where this started. Tallow from grass-fed cows is almost identical to our own skin oils. It carries vitamins A, D, E, and K, it absorbs smoothly, and it helps kids’ sensitive skin stay calm and protected. We slow-infuse it with real vanilla and coffee beans — no hormone-disrupting essential oils, no seed oils.

We had to make this ourselves, because nobody else was doing it right. This is our first step, but not our last — we’ve studied, listened, read, and tested to build something safe for our family and now yours.

This lotion began for my boys, but it’s truly for everyone. Your body never takes the day off — and neither should your skincare.

Why We Started

When you look up how to make something correctly, you realize almost nothing in the market is done right. That’s why we had to do it ourselves.

In our home, we live intentionally. We eat no refined sugar or corn syrup — only real food like fruit, maple syrup, raw honey, and corn in its natural form. We’ve swapped out plastics and fake foods wherever possible. And we didn’t stop at what we eat — we also studied everything we put on our skin.

This tallow lotion is our first step.

Why Tallow?

  • Carries natural vitamins A, D, E, and K.

  • Similar to our skin’s own oils, so it blends easily.

  • Gentle enough for kids with sensitive skin.

  • Infused with real vanilla and coffee beans for antioxidants and a warm, natural scent.

What About the Cows?

No cows are harmed. Tallow comes from suet, a part that’s often wasted. We work with local, grass-fed farms that let cows live outdoors, eat grass, and thrive the way nature intended.

Our Commitment

We’ve done the work — the research, the reading, the testing — so you don’t have to. This lotion is the first in what we hope will be a whole line of products made the way they should be: safe, simple, honest, and effective.
