Organic Fruit Picking, Year Round
A Year of Organic U-Pick: The Bay Area Family Fruit Calendar
Most families treat fruit picking as a one-season event. You go for strawberries in the spring, maybe apples in the fall, and the rest of the year you buy your berries at the grocery store like everyone else. But if you're willing to drive anywhere from twenty minutes to two hours from the East Bay, there is a real, certified-organic U-pick outing waiting for you almost every month of the year. Winter is the one true gap, and even that has an answer.
This is the calendar I wish someone had handed me. Every farm below is either USDA, CCOF, or OCIA certified organic, confirmed against the farm's own current materials rather than a secondhand list. A few names you'll see floating around Bay Area "best U-pick" roundups didn't make the cut here, not because they're bad farms, but because I couldn't pin down current, credible organic certification for them. I'd rather hand you nine farms you can trust than fifteen you have to double-check yourself.
With kids around three and five, the sweet spot is a farm where the fruit hangs low, the ground is stable enough for small feet, and there's something to look at besides produce. I've noted which farms deliver on that.
Every farm on both lists is genuine U-pick. You're out in the field or orchard picking the fruit off the plant yourself, not buying a pre-picked box. A few also sell pre-picked fruit in a farm store alongside the U-pick option, but the U-pick itself is hands-on at all of them.
Only a couple require reservations, like Webb Ranch, Duckworth, and Very Mulberry. Tru2Earth asks for a paid reservation (otherwise can sell out). Everyone else you can just show up during posted hours, though it's still smart to check the farm's Instagram or call ahead since fruit can sell out on a good weekend.
Every Organic Option, Month by Month
This is the full picture: organized by month, with what's actually available that month. Use this one when you want to see everything on the table for a given weekend and choose based on your own drive-time tolerance and what is available. Farms marked with an asterisk are the three with organic status I couldn't fully confirm independently.
