Books

Below are some of my favorites on health, habits and the human mind.

  • Deep Nutrition: Why your Genes Need Traditional Food by Catherine Shanahan

    • One book i wish everyone would read. She writes about nutrition as if it is a novel. Started out as a pamphlet but she had so much info to share it became a rather large book packed with surprising facts and studies. I think i highlighted something on every page.

  • The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor  by Mark Schatzker

    • Evolution of food over the last century, how flavor means nutrition (and how our food is being stripped and replaced with dorito-like flavorings)

  • Body Love: Live in Balance, Weigh What You Want, and Free Yourself from Food Drama Forever by Kelly LeVeque

    • An easy read, nutritionist of the stars (and once cancer researcher) explains how we can learn to enjoy our foods and listen to our bodies again.

  • Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Giants Hooked us by Michael Moss

    • Lots of interviews with Food execs and research on the big companies that rule our food system. Can be a bit dry, but cool to hear of some meetings and memo’s that hd such a big impact on nutritional research, as well as our availability to that research.

  • Anticancer: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber MD PhD

    • The American diet is the exact recipe for contracting Cancer. (other countries have the same amount of cells that could turn cancerous, ours are just becoming activated much more aggressively). This doctor found out he had it, and put together a diet of foods that has been known to prevent cancer, and keep it at bay if you do find out you are at risk.

  • The Acid Alkaline Food Guide - Second Edition: A Quick Reference to Foods & Their Effect on pH Levels by Dr. Susan E. Brown

    • Most foods are okay to eat, if you are able to maintain balance in your gut (and eat more veggies than anything else!). Think of all foods (not in terms of calories), but how to maintain an alkaline environment in your gut.

  • Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging by Sebastian Junger

    • How having a community is important to everyone

  • The Body Book by Cameron Diaz

    • Okay, dont laugh. This is actually written with some great doctors that take complex info on our body. Really easy to read and great introduction on health in a big picture. Follow up book, The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time
